The True Nature of Antarctica

Most of you think of Antarctica in much the same way as the Arctic: a snow covered, inhospitable wasteland. But beneath its chilly exterior Antarctica houses something not present in the Arctic, Antarctica has mountains to break up the monotonous ice sheets.

This image from the British Antarctic Survery shows the various mountain ranges with highest elevations in red and lowest in blue. The image itself was created using radar which passes easily through ice but bounces off the rock beneath in order to reveal Antarctica’s skeleton. The really interesting thing is only about 1% of this geography is visible on the surface due to being covered in a km of snow and ice, despite some mountains being as tall as the European alps.
